College Success Director - Newark

Here’s what you need to know:

KIPP New Jersey is looking for a College Success Director to join our KIPP Through College team. KIPP was founded on the idea that great leaders create great schools, and that a great school can change the trajectory of a child’s life. This is true for our College Success Director too. We are seeking a great leader to run a high-performing team that will ensure we fulfill the promise we make to our students and families starting in Kindergarten: college completion. The College Success Director’s purpose is to drive and improve college completion outcomes for our current and future KIPP New Jersey alumni.

A bit more about you…We need you to ensure that our KIPP NJ alumni graduate from a 4-year college or university within 4 - 6 years. We celebrate college completion in any timeline it takes a student, but we encourage and advocate for college completion in 4 years because we believe this is has the most long-term benefits. We need you to lead our College Success Team that works to ensure our KIPP NJ alumni have the support they need to succeed in and graduate from college. We're looking for you to execute a world-class college success strategy. You will be responsible for training, managing and coaching a team of College Success Advisors who will execute KIPP New Jersey’s vision and strategy. This position reports to the Managing Director of KIPP Through College.

You know that working beyond traditional office hours means that kids will have access to more resources and that they will get closer to graduating from college. You know that a do whatever it takes mindset is what is necessary to ensuring all of our students successfully complete college. You are organized and efficient while building and maintaining strong relationships with your direct reports and with key stakeholders. You take your work seriously, and also have a lot of fun with students and as a member of our team.

Must Haves:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with first generation, low income and/or underrepresented students
  • 3-5 years of experience leading and managing a large, high performing team
  • A passion for and evidence of measurable results
  • Solution-orientation
  • Unwavering belief that all KIPP New Jersey students can finish college
  • Unwavering determination to do whatever necessary to help KIPP NJ students achieve their goals
  • Ability to multitask, work collaboratively, and maintain focus
Nice to have:
  • Experience using SalesForce
  • Comfortable using Excel and Google Spreadsheets
  • A car for travel to KIPP schools as well as college campuses (mileage reimbursement provided for schools that aren’t local)
Work Demands
  • Occasional nights and weekends
  • Ability to travel to colleges and occasional professional development opportunities both in and out of-state
  • Ability to travel occasionally to Camden, NJ to collaborate with the Placement Team and ensure a strong high school to college transition for our KIPPsters there
 Here’s what you’ll be doing;
 Strategic Planning
  • Execute on a long-term college persistence strategy to ensure our alumni are graduating from college within 4-6 years
  • Develop and maintain tools, resources, and systems for intrusive college advising to support KIPP New Jersey alumni in successfully completing college within 4-6 years with a focus on on-time graduation (within 4 years)
  • Set, track, and aggressively monitor long-term college persistence goals and annual milestones with the Managing Director of KIPP Through College
  • Collaborate frequently with the College Placement Directors to monitor and adjust college completion strategy and with the Director of Career Services to ensure our alumni have the exposure and experience needed to have a strong launch into their career post-college
Team Management
  •  Manage team of College Success Advisors to ensure that KIPP New Jersey alumni are on track to graduate from college on time and are going on to lead choice-filled lives post-college
  • Conduct observations and provide professional development and coaching to College Success Advisors to ensure that persistence work with alumni is high-quality and goal-driven
  • Plan weekly College Success Team meetings that provide advisors with the opportunity to review the team’s progress to goals, plan ahead for upcoming goals and events, practice role playing tricky conversations with students and families, etc.
Stakeholder Management
  • Collaborate, learn, push, and grow with other Directors on the KTC Leadership Team in order to maximize results with students
  • Participate in all KIPP New Jersey match meetings
  •  Plan and lead quarterly PD for KTC staff alongside the KTC Leadership Team
  •  Develop and lead training for regional and organizational leaders and staff on topics related to college completion and career success
Data Management
  • Utilize and improve upon existing data tracking systems to ensure that the KTC team can make data-based decisions in strategic planning and advising students and families
  •  Aggressively monitor College Success Team data to ensure that it’s consistently up-to-date and accurate
Student Focus
  • React urgently with quick problem-solving skills when student emergencies arise
  • Support tier 1 and 2 student emergencies alongside counselors
  • Lead tier 3 student emergency work alongside Director of Social Work
  • Coordinate ongoing professional development for staff regarding socio-emotional supports for students
College Partner Relationship Management
  • Maintain strategic college partnerships (2 and 4 year) to ensure that KIPP New Jersey alumni are and remain enrolled in colleges they are likely graduate from
  • Train and support College Success Advisors to engage in high-quality, monthly meetings with college support staff to ensure students are utilizing available resources on campus and that they have the support they need to succeed and thrive on campus
